The infrastructure in the tunnel systems in the area Flachau on the A10 Tauern motorway has been undergoing extensive modernisation by ECOexperts in a joint venture with Leyrer+ Graf since October. This is to ensure that the tunnel infrastructure will continue to meet the highest safety and efficiency standards for decades to come. This major project, which is scheduled for completion by June 2025, requires precise planning and execution, as the conversion is taking place in parallel with a complex construction project to renovate the anchor wall and while the motorway is still in operation.

As part of the renovation, which has become necessary after more than 20 years of operation, the tunnel’s entire electrical system is being replaced. The project includes the connection to the ASFINAG traffic management centre with the modernised redundant servers and control units. The latest version of RadeRunner is used as the control system. RadeRunner, as a process control system, which is also used at the control level, meets all the requirements of the current NIS directive.

Furthermore the project covers the complete installation of an efficient LED lighting, of a modern emergency call system, a new central fire alarm system, as well as the updating of the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and an advanced traffic control system.

The project is divided into two phases: the first phase of the renovation of the carriageway will take place from October to November 2024, while the second phase for the opposite carriageway is planned for April to June 2025. During this construction period, the tunnel will be operated in two-way traffic to maintain traffic flow. To ensure safety during the modernisation, the new control units will be installed and tested in parallel with the existing system. This ensures continuous monitoring and control of tunnel operations, even during construction work.

The Kaisermühlentunnel is located on the A22 motorway in Vienna (Austria). With a length of 2.2 km, it is the longest urban tunnel in Vienna. With a daily throughput of more than 125,000 vehicles, it is also the busiest in Austria. With three main lanes, two secondary lanes and 10 ramps in the tunnel, it poses the highest demands.

Renovation during night-time traffic

The operating and safety equipment is being renewed during traffic. All work in the tunnel takes place at night, with only individual lanes being closed. All components are installed and commissioned in parallel with the existing running system.

The challenge of tunnel ventilation

Due to the large number of lanes, side lanes and ramps, tunnel ventilation is extremely complex. A special tunnel simulator can be used to test the ventilation in simulation mode even while traffic is flowing, thus reducing the commissioning phase.

S16 Strenger Tunnel

Der Strengen-Tunnel ist ein doppel-röhriger Autobahntunnel und ist Teil der S16 Arlberg Schnellstraße. Er ist die Erweiterung der S16 als zweiröhriger Tunnel und auch eine Umfahrung von dem Ort Stregen. Der Tunnel ist 5,8 km lang und hat zwischen den Röhren 11 Querschläge. Der Tunnel wurde 2000 bis 2006 gebaut und wurde nach den letzten Vorschriften saniert. ecoexperts unterstützte die Firma DPB GmbH bei der Detailplanung, der Leittechhnik und bei der Inbetriebnahme.

Sanierung unter Verkehr
Um die Sicherheit im Tunnel zu erhöhen wurde der Tunnel in zwei Phasen saniert. Nach der Sanierung der ersten Röhre wurde der Verkehr durch die sanierte Röhre geführt. Anschließend wurde die zweite Röhre innerhalb kurzer Zeit saniert. Herausforderung war dabei die adaptierung der Steuerung, da Teile wie die Mittelspannungsanlage nicht röhren-getrennt ausgeführt waren.

System Update unter Verkehr ohne Shutdown
Da ständig eine Röhre unter Verkehr war, musste die Sanierung des SCADA-Systems ohne Shutdown verfügbar bleiben. Ebenso wurden Test und Inbetriebnahme parallel zum Verkehr durchgeführt.

Fahrsteifensignalisierung mit LED-Wechselverkehrszeichen
Es wurden mehr als 100 Fahrstreifensignalisierungen in LED-WVZ Technik im Tunnel installiert. Diese wurden mit einer BUS-Anbindung an das Leitsystem gekoppelt und werden mit den Verkaufsprogrammen automatisch geschalten.

Hard- und Softwareupgrade der bestehenden Steuerungen
Hoche Anforderungene an Sicherheit und Flexibilität wurde durch ein upgrade der bestehenden Hard- und Software gelöst. Als Softwarelösung wurde aX4.x verwendet.

A02 Kollmann Haberberg

Haberberg, Kollmann and Donnersberg tunnel are part of the A02 motorway in Carinthia. These tunnels are after the refurbished according to the latest technical safety regulations. The refurbishment of thetunnels are divided into two phases in 2018. With this renewal will also installed the AKUT (acoustic warning system) system in the Kollmann tunnel. ecoexperts delivers control system for the company DPB and Strabag.

In order to increase the safety in the tunnel, the tunnel will be renovated in two phases. After the renovation of the first tube, traffic will be directed through the renovated tube. The ventilation system in the Donnersberg tunnel is also being renewed. According to the latest standard, the regulation is also carried out with frequency-controlled fans. High demands on security and flexibility are met by the latest SCADA system – acuradeITS. acurade is a WEB-based SCADA technology with multi-vendor support, redundancy functionality, secure data transmission and much more.

A09 Kienberg Hungerbichl

The Kienberg tunnel with a length of 1.45 km and the Hungerbichl tunnel with a length of 0.53 km are located on the A9 Phyrn Autobahn, north of the Klaus tunnel chain. Both tunnels consist of two two-lane tunnel tubes that are connected by a valley crossing.

Project description
The project A09 Phyrn Autobahn Tunnel Kienberg and Tunnel Hungerbichl renovation and adaptation to STSG includes the replacement of the existing control components and the renovation of the electrical system. The electrical equipment runs in several electronics of an operating station and the operating center Kienberg. Several access points are connected to control the free field systems.

The Klaus node was integrated into the tunnel control system with a dirt hopper, a water protection system and several signposts from the state road. Controlling the radar system dynamically adjusts it to the speed in the tunnel.

The fully automatic lighting control for the entrance and passage areas depending on the outside light, the traffic volume and occurring events cover the highest safety standards. In the event of a fire, the tunnel ventilation controls the reliable flue gas discharge to protect the traffic jams.

The special location of the tunnels on the A09, directly between the Klaus tunnel chain and the Inzersdorf-Schön section, required a direct exchange of information between the tunnels. Different technological interfaces were used to implement the higher-level traffic control system over the entire route. Monitoring is carried out centrally by the traffic management center in Ardning.

The UFT St. Andrä is located on the A10 Tauern Autobahn between the ABM Zauchen and the Oswaldibergtunnel. It has a length of 480 meters and consists of 2 structurally separate tubes, each with 2 lanes in one directional lane.

Project description
The control system exchange project for the A10 Tauern Autobahn UFT St. Andrä includes the replacement of the existing control and visualization components and the renovation of the electrical system. The electrical devices run in 2 electronic ones. For the connection of the height control, an access point is connected, which takes over height detection and the switching of the height control lights.

For the regulation of traffic 10 pieces 3begr. Traffic lights where converted to LED technology. The lighting control has been newly implemented and reacts to changes in the outside, inside and entrance luminance. Traffic detection has also been modernized.

When implementing the functions and creating the individual objects, special attention was paid to the planning manual-specific execution specifications for visualization and data communication.
